Riding the rollercoaster

Girls, we’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, puberty is different for everyone . It can be a hiccup or it can be a total roller coaster ride. It affects you both physically and mentally and staying positive is half the battle! Here are our hints and tips to getting through!

Eat well

Eating healthy is super important. We never recommend girls go on crazy diets. Lots of fruit and vegetables and less processed, sugary foods is the way to go. Plus, of course, plenty of water! If you’re looking for some assistance with your diet, it’s important that you follow the advice of a professional, such as a doctor or nutritionist. There are heaps of girls on Instagram telling us what we should and shouldn’t eat, but they’re not always educated. We suggest you stick to what the professionals say on this one.

Exercise regularly

There is no down side to exercising! It’s great for your physical wellbeing, but when you exercise you also release these chemicals called endorphins which brighten your mood! Exercising for at least 30 minutes per day is ideal.

Keep a diary

Keeping a diary if often a good idea – especially to keep track of your emotions and how you’re feeling. We all have down days but they should be well outweighed by the up days. If that’s not the case, have a chat to your parents or school counsellor. If that’s not an option, Kids Help Line is also a great service. Anxiety and depression are nothing to be ashamed of, and getting on top of them early should be a priority.

Hygiene

Puberty can make you a little hot under the collar, so make sure you shower regularly. Use an antiperspirant to help control sweating and odour under your armpits – not just a body spray! That will mingle with the sweat and odour and… well, it’s not good! Your hair and skin may become more oily so wash regularly and maybe check out some of the skincare products designed for teens.

Relax!

Make sure you spend some time chilling out, doing whatever it is that makes you happy – singing, dancing, crafting, reading, sport, listening to music or hanging out with your besties. We can all get tied up with school and homework and chores and activities – but down time is also important. It sounds weird, but if you need to, schedule it into your busy day! We recommend at least 15 minutes a day where it’s just ‘you time’.

Be kind to yourself!

Always remember you’re awesome! Many girls feel under enormous pressure to be good at everything – and that’s just not possible! Remember that what you see on social media isn’t always real. Pictures have been shot with great angles and editing. So focus on you, and what you love and enjoy doing. If it ever gets too much, talk to a trusted adult – don’t let it build up.

Puberty might be a roller coaster, but hey, roller coasters are also fun! So slow down and enjoy the ride.

Love, Libra x
