The inside story on periods

On the inside, there are two ovaries which are about the size and shape of walnuts and contain about 200,000 ova (the real term for ‘eggs’). Each month, an ovum (the singular noun of ova) is released from one of these ovaries and travels down the fallopian tube into the uterus where a lining of blood and mucus has been building up. The uterus is where a baby develops if the ovum has been fertilised by a male sperm, otherwise it and the lining are released through your vagina – and that’s called menstruation or more commonly, a period.
