How To Use Pads and Dispose of Them Afterwards

Whether you're getting your first period or just want a refresher, learning how to use pads properly is a big part of feeling comfortable and confident during your cycle. Pads are one of the most common period products, they’re easy to use, super accessible, and come in loads of sizes for different flows.

Let’s answer all your pad-related questions, from how to put on a pad to how to toss it when you’re done.

What exactly is a pad?

A pad (also called a sanitary pad or menstrual pad) is a soft, absorbent strip that sticks to the inside of your underwear to catch and absorb period blood. They come in different shapes, lengths, and thicknesses, from ultra-thin pads to extra pads.

Some have wings (the little flaps that fold over the sides of your undies), which help keep the pad in place and stop leaks. Others are wingless and still totally effective, it’s just about personal preference.

How to put on a pad?

Alright, here’s the breakdown. Whether you’re at home or out and about, putting on a pad is simple once you get the hang of it.

  1. Start with clean hands. Always wash your hands before touching any period products.
  2. Unwrap the pad. Peel off the adhesive backing to expose the sticky strip underneath.
  3. Stick it to your underwear. Place the pad lengthwise in the centre of your underwear. If it has wings, peel the backing off those too and fold them around the sides of your underwear.
  4. Adjust as needed. Make sure it feels secure and is covering the area where bleeding is most likely to occur.

Learning how to put on a pad might take a couple of tries at first but trust your instincts. You’ll quickly get a feel for what works for your body.

Which side of the pad goes in the front?

Great question and yes, there is a right way around! Our pads all have a heart shape so you always know where the front is. Generally, the longer side of the pad goes towards the back. If you’re using a pad that’s shaped differently on each end, the narrower end usually goes at the front of your underwear.

How to wear a pad comfortably?

  • Choose the right size. Light day? Go for a thinner pad or liner. Heavy flow? A longer or overnight pad may feel safer.
  • Wear the right underwear. Snug, cotton undies help the pad stay in place and feel more secure.
  • Change regularly. Aim to swap your pad every 4–6 hours, or sooner if it feels full or uncomfortable. Though if you have a heavy period, our goodnights pads provide protection for up to 12 hours.

Comfort comes with a bit of trial and error, try a few types and see what works for your flow and lifestyle.

How to use a pad in public?

We’ve all had that moment: your period starts when you’re at school, at a friend’s place, or anywhere but home. No stress, here’s how to handle it:

  • Keep a couple of pads in your bag, pencil case, or locker.
  • Head to the bathroom, unwrap the pad, and stick it in your underwear like usual.
  • A small toiletry pouch with a spare pair of undies, pads, and some wipes can be a game-changer when you're on the go.

What’s the best way to dispose off a pad?

Disposing of pads is all about being clean, respectful, and eco-conscious when you can. Here’s how:

  1. Roll it up. Fold the used pad in on itself, sticky side in, so nothing leaks.
  2. Wrap it. Use the wrapper from your new pad or toilet paper to cover the used one.
  3. Toss it in the bin. Look for a sanitary bin if you’re in a public bathroom. At home, wrap it and throw it in the bathroom bin.

Pads shouldn’t be flushed, they don’t break down like toilet paper and can cause blockages.

How do I know when to change my pad?

If the pad feels wet, starts to smell, or has been on for more than 6 hours, it’s time for a fresh one. You might notice a bit of leaking or discomfort, both are signs to switch it up. It’s all about staying clean and feeling comfortable throughout the day.

Final Thoughts

Using pads doesn’t have to feel awkward or confusing. Whether you're learning how to use a pad for the first time or just want to get better at managing your period, it’s all part of getting to know your body.

Remember, everyone’s flow is different, what works for your friend might not work for you, and that’s totally okay. Try different types of pads, track your cycle, and find what makes you feel confident.

Got more questions? You're not alone: keep asking, keep learning, and take care of you.
