How does a tampon work?

Hi Gemmah!
I was randomly wondering how tampons work, since they’re much more different to pads, and do they make you lose your virginity? Thanks!

I’m not Gemmah but I can help, first question tampon work by inserting in to the vagina and when inserted, they adsorb the period blood before reaching the outside world. There are a few different tampons you can use 1. Just a plan tampon they are used by pushing in the vagina by your finger 2. Applicator tampon these ones have plastic around it kinda like a barrel these ones for me they are the easiest to insert (but this is me you might find the other ones work better) 3. Cardboard applicator tampons like the other applicator ones but it has a cardboard barrel.

Do they make you lose your virginity Nope! It’s a myth your virginity is lost by having s3x not by a tampon.

And one other thing it’s very rare but very Serious about it Toxic shock syndrome is a sudden, potentially fatal condition that can be caused by tampons. It’s caused by the release of toxins from an overgrowth of bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus, or staph, which is found in many women’s bodies. Toxic shock syndrome affects menstruating women. Now don’t panic it’s only a very very little chance of getting but to help to not get it don’t leave Your tampon in for more than 4-8 hours!

    Hope this helped! Xx Rosie

    Hi Benushi,

Rosie is absolutely right! That’s how tampons work & using them doesn’t cause you to lose your virginity.

Toxic shock syndrome (or TSS) is super rare but something to be aware of. It’s caused by stagnant blood, so safe tampon & menstrual cup use can significantly reduce the risk of this serious bacterial infection. As a guide, change your tampon every 4 hours, just never leave it in for more than 8 hours.
