I don’t want to embarrass myself

Hi Gemmah, it’s my first time here and I was wondering how I am supposed to know when my first period will happen. I’m kind of scared that it’s going to be in front of my friends or someone I know and I don’t want to embarrass myself in front of someone. Please help me to know when it will happen and also can your period happen when I’m on the toilet? Thank you and please answer this!! Xx

I wish I could give you a definite answer! Unfortunately, there’s no way of knowing exactly when we’ll get our first period.

Most people will experience their first period around the ages of 12 & 14, but it can occur anytime between 9 & 17. There are a few signs which can suggest your period is on its way. These include discharge, your breasts developing, your hips widening & hair growing under your arms & down there. If you notice discharge with a brownish tinge, then get prepared, your period is coming soon! A few days before your first period you may experience some cramping or feel a little irritable. If you notice these signs, then you can always pop on a liner just in case. That way, if you’re around your friends, you’ll be covered! I recommend a Libra Protect Active Liner.

You may notice a slippery wet feeling around your vagina and some blood in your undies, this is your period. It’s normal for it to be light & last just a few days. It may take anywhere between a few months to a whole year to regulate. It’s a good idea to carry some pads with you in a little purse. That way you’ll never be caught out unprepared. We suggest our Libra Girl range, they’re specially designed for smaller bodies & are just as absorbent as our main range.

Most first period stories are different, & some are more eventful than other. Some girls do just go to the toilet & there it is! Remember, periods are normal & nothing to be embarrassed about!
