Can I Skip My Period?

Okay ladies, let’s be real. Most of the time, we don’t love having our period! And there are certainly times we wish we didn’t have to #dealwithit. While there are totally ways we can say ‘hold up’, before we get into them, the most important thing to know is that you should consult your GP before making any decisions.

So, what’s the deal? 

To skip periods, we need to override or control our hormones. There are two avenues we can take here. If they just keep getting in the way, you can stop your periods altogether (don’t worry, it’s not permanent), or if it’s just for an event like a swimming carnival, you could skip just the one time.

To stop your periods altogether, there are a few contraceptive options including hormone releasing implants, IUDs and contraceptive injections. However, there are some women who spot or will get irregular periods through these methods anyhow.

If you’re on the oral contraceptive pill, you can choose when to skip a period by not taking the ‘sugar pills’. These sugar pills don’t contain hormones, so they induce a period. By skipping these sugar pills and going from active pills to active pills, you should be able to skip your period.

Again, this is not a total given and you should know that some women will still experience a bit of breakthrough bleeding or spotting doing this. If you’re unsure which pills are which, make sure you speak to your pharmacist or doctor so you’re absolutely clear! Taken correctly, you can skip your period and not compromise your contraception coverage.
