Which tampon size is right for you
No matter if you’re a tampon novice or tampon pro, at some point we’ve all asked the same question: “Is this the right sized tampon for me?”
When it comes to tampons, size does matter! Team Libra is here to answer your most pressing tampon questions. What do different tampon sizes mean, who should use a tampon and how to find the perfect size for you.
What tampon sizes are there?
In the world of tampons, one size doesn’t fit all. Whether it’s your first period or you’re a seasoned pro, it’s a matter of finding a fit that’s right for you.
Just like pads and period undies, Libra tampons come in several different sizes — covering all ages, bodies and needs. When we talk about different sized tampons, forget the term ‘wide-set vagina’. Tampon sizes are not related to vagina size, it’s actually all about absorbency!
Here’s what to know about our different tampon ranges:
- Libra Body Fit Regular Tampons are for your regular flow. Unless you have extra-heavy bleeding, these are ideal for most days of your period. If your flow is moderate, it’s best to wear regular tampons and replace them around every 4 hours.
- Libra Body Fit Super Tampons have a high absorbency and are wider than other tampons. Their bigger size makes our Super Tampons ideal for your heavy flow days.
- Libra Girl Tampons are designed for smaller bodies. Slim and shorter than other tampon sizes, these are perfect for first-timers or during light flow days. Available in both regular and super absorbencies.
- Libra Organic Cotton Tampons are kind to your body. These 100% Australian Certified Organic tampons are available in regular, for moderate flows, and super, for when you need a little more absorbency.
How to choose the right tampon size?
It often takes a bit of trial and error to find the right tampon size, and our advice is to let your flow guide you. A good gauge on whether your tampon size is correct is to check if there’s white space on the tampon after 4 hours. If there is, or if the tampon feels uncomfortable because it’s dry, move to a lower absorbency. If you find your tampon is leaking, it’s probably time to move to a higher absorbency. If you’re worried about a potential leak, you can wear a pad, liner or period undies with your tampon as backup, until you find the perfect tampon for your flow. Remember too, that your flow will change throughout your cycle, so it’s a good idea to have a few different tampon sizes on hand!
Tampons should definitely not cause you any pain. Once in, you should not feel it’s there. If you do experience any discomfort, it could be because the tampon hasn’t been properly positioned.
How often should you change your tampon?
We need to change our tampons every 4 hours or so, and they should never be left in for longer than 8 hours. There’s a rare but serious condition called ‘Toxic Shock Syndrome’ that is associated with tampons that have been left in the vagina for a long time. The blood-soaked tampon can encourage an overgrowth of bacteria and the bacteria can release toxins into the bloodstream, which causes symptoms of shock. These toxins can lead to organ and tissue damage and can be fatal.
So, if you find you’re super forgetful, set a reminder on your phone “CMT” - change my tamp. Blood on the tampon string is also a prompt that it’s time for a change.
Can a virgin or a teenager use a tampon?
Short answer: yes! Don’t listen to anyone who tells you virgins and teenagers can’t use tampons. There is an outdated belief that a virgin is defined by the hymen (the tissue that covers the vaginal opening) being intact. However, the reality is that the hymen can tear from everyday movement and life! If you’re menstruating, you can wear a tampon, period.
It might feel strange at first, but there’s also no reason you can’t wear a tampon if it’s your first period. Our range of Libra Girl tampons are designed with smaller bodies in mind, so they’re a good choice if you’re a beginner or not sure what tampon size you should use for your first time.
